1. Ashton Irwin: Taking the cajon to the masses

Anyone who is relatively active on Twitter these days will know that there is a function in the top right of the page that allows you to search specific terms that are mentioned in tweets. I use this function daily to search for terms like “cajon” “cajon drum” and “drumming” ect. It helps me to stay current on what is going on in the cajon and drumming community and also helps me see what people are getting excited about.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that when ever I would search the term “cajon drum”  most of the tweets coming back were talking about this one guy who’s twitter name is: @Ashton5SOS. I figured that I needed to know more about this chap who semed to be trending more than #throwbackthursday

After a small amount of digging, I found that the man who’s ubiquitous Twitter presence was dominating everything cajon is Ashton Irwin, the 19 year old drummer and vocalist from Australian pop sensation 5 Seconds of Summer, who rose to fame after Luke HemmingsMichael Clifford, and Calum Hood got together and began posting covers of popular songs on YouTube. Ashton Irwin joined the band in 2011 and 5 Seconds of Summer was born.

Ashton playing his Meinl cajon with his signature style on the front.

For many of the bands smaller performances Ashton uses his Meinl cajon which he customizes by writing in black tape “Ash xx” on the front. With this, Ashton has started a cajon craze among5SOS fans (of which there are millions) to the point where fans are getting their own cajons and customizing them with their own signatures of black tape and posting the results on twitter. Ashton himself, as of this date, has 1.8 million twitter followers which probably gives him one of the biggest reaches of anyone who has ever sat on a cajon. His audience seems to be mostly made up of people anywhere between the ages of 12 and 19 and the band themselves have a huge global fan base.

Ashton Irwin is a good pop drummer and a solid cajon player who plays in his own way, but one thing is for sure, he is spreading the word of cajon to the next generation. Literally all of them.
